"Actually the original versions of Skinnie Minnie was Bill Haley & the Comets, the original Let's Have A Party was Elvis (pre-Wanda, but the Lyres do the Riverias arrangment), Sick & TIred was originally done by Chris Kenner, Ain't That Lovin' You Baby by Jimmy Reed, Geraldine by the Ole Miss Downbeats, Gettin' Plenty Lovin' by the Gardenias (as My Baby's Tops w/Ike Turner's band, two years before Esquerita's version), Little Sally Tease by Don & the Goodtimes, Louie Louie by Richard Berry, then the Wailers w/Rockin' Rob Roberts."
I didn't found on DMZ something similar, so i did the list myself. I think i own everything by them so i thought to give it a try.
Feel free to revise on any mistakes or pass overs.

I am a huge fan of The Lyres....I did not think there were many of us left? Lovin' Cup is taken from The Triumps version. Sick and Tired is from The Searchers (live) version. No More is by The Stonemen....Songs like Changed Man - Otis Redding and When I Needed You By The Chain Reaction....I have not heard the Lyres play these songs?? Where are they from? Lyres Rule!!

very fine work ! just correct one thing: you just wrote Sandy Sarjeant with her fabulous song 'Can't Stop The Watn' like "Sargent". Would be grateful, if you correct it into "Sarjeant" ;-).
ReplyDeleteBtw: you can look at www.myspace.com/sandysarjeantfansite
if you are interested.
great, great bands. great music. isn't jezebel also gene vincent and older?
ReplyDeleteI used to see the Lyres everytime they came to NYC from '83 to '86, usually at Danceteria. My friend Jon Fox, a DJ from WNYU, turned me onto them and they've been my fave band ever since.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever want to make a documentary, Jeff, just contact Mike L. at Colorlab in Rockville, Maryland.
You deserve some props and a chance to get that hellacious music out there to a new generation that is dying on the vine, musically speaking. People just don't know what they're missing...
You forgot "Louise" by Paul Revere & The Raiders
ReplyDeleteyou also forgot "Beat Guitar" by The Wailers
ReplyDeleteFavorite song by the Lyres... "She Pays the Rent"..... don't know who wrote it.... anybody?
ReplyDeleteJeff Conolly. It's an original.
